Shirley golfer Jamie Carney won the English Schools Golf Association (ESGA) Under-16s Championship (July 16), his first national title. For chartered accountant Michael Meakin, a partner at Clement Keys who looks after Jamie's financial interests, it was an important win. "Jamie's progress has been remarkable and I am delighted that he has now added a national title to his many achievements," says Mr Meakin. "Thanks to this victory, Jamie will be an automatic choice for the
national squad in this year's English Schools International against Wales,
which will be played in Birmingham on Fiveteen-year old Jamie, who learnt the basics of golf at the age of eight and now plays off a handicap of two, was one of only 40 boys who were invited to take part in the competition at Thetford Golf Club. English Schools Sports is one of the premier sports organisations for the under-18s, promoting athletics, rugby and football, as well as golf. In clinching the ESGA Under-16s Championship Jamie emulates professionals
"If he continues to improve at this rate and remains committed to achieving his ambition of becoming a professional golfer, we believe he could have a very bright future on the European PGA Tour," said Mr Meakin. Jamie trains with the England squad and is a regular in Warwickshire's Under-18s team despite being only fifteen years old. He was selected by Warwickshire to play in the County Sixes Qualifier
for the English Junior County Finals, where he posted Warwickshire's joint
second best performance, and was undefeated in the pre-season Boys Four
Counties competition against Gloucestershire, Staffordshire and Worcestershire,
helping Warwickshire to retain the title for the seventh year in a row. |
